First Steps for Autism
Families who have a child newly diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), or who suspect their child may have ASD, face many challenges. The First Steps Autism Program understands the need for these families to connect with local community resources and have access to pertinent, relevant information pertaining to Autism.
First Steps Autism Program is a home visiting program that provides support for these families through regular visits from a variety of clinicians including a social worker, nurse, and/or family counselors.
The clinicians may work with families to:
- Provide information about child health and development
- Help families learn more about autism
- Assist families in advocating for their child’s needs
- Discuss with families the expectations of parenting a child who has a developmental disability
- Offers suggestions for involving friends, family members, and community in the child’s life
- Connect families to local community resources for support and continued advocacy
- Support families to cope with and accept their child’s disability in order to maximize the potential of both child and family
