The Rural Nursing Center of Bloomsburg University
and Shamokin Area Community Hospital is located
in Northumberland County of Pennsylvania.
The center is a collaborative partnership
between Shamokin Area Community Hospital and
Bloomsburg University, which came into being
in September of 1999.
The area of Northumberland County where the
center is located is designated as rural,
medically undeserved (MUA) and a Health Professional
Shortage Area (HPSA). The surrounding countryside
is one of coal mining and farming. The Nursing
Center has rural certification.
The center services all age categories in
Coal Township, Shamokin and surrounding
communities in the areas of primary health
care, health promotion, disease prevention
and risk appraisals. Both faculty of the
Bloomsburg University Department of Nursing
and their undergraduate and graduate nursing
students provide these services and handle
the administrative duties of the center.
Shamokin Area Community Hospital provides
in-kind services of space, equipment and
administrative assistance in the areas of
billing and finances.
Approximately 1200 to 1500 clients were reached
through the centers efforts in health education,
disease prevention and primary care services
over the past year.
